Algicid DX is a combination of two antacids—Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate—along with an Alginate (Sodium Alginate). This formulation provides relief through a dual, non-systemic mechanism:
Rapid Acid Neutralization:
Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate neutralize excess gastric acid, providing quick relief from heartburn, indigestion, and discomfort.
Protective Raft Formation:
Upon contact with gastric acid, sodium alginate forms a viscous gel or “raft” of alginic acid with a near-neutral pH. This raft floats on top of stomach contents and caps the acid pocket, reducing acid exposure to the esophagus for up to four hours.
The raft acts as a physical barrier, preventing reflux and protecting the esophagus from acid, pepsin, and bile. In severe reflux, the raft itself may reflux into the esophagus, exerting a soothing (demulcent) effect. In-vitro studies also show that the raft can trap bile and pepsin, offering additional esophageal protection.
The action of Algicid DX is purely physical and does not rely on systemic absorption.
